“The problem”

This client presented with with general Tendinosis (this is a fancy way of saying the tendons are wearing out) of the shoulder and a SLAP tear verified by MRI.

His general symptoms were of course some significant pain, general weakness and most importantly a reduction in quality of life. The two most significant pain points being unable to play with his young children and being sidelined from his workouts!

There was 3 key movements we used to allow the shoulder to heal, regain strength and ultimately get our client back to rough housing with the kids and pushing the limit in the gym!

“The Movements”

The three main movements we used were one mobility movement and two strength building movements.

The first is the shoulder sleeper stretch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BN8bRVq3Xo we performed this for 2 minutes each side at the beginning of each session.

The second movement was an external rotation on the knee https://youtube.com/watch?v=aUigOgxfqZg?si=9KJs9LYFIZjOv6TB we performed these for 3 sets of 10-15 reps at 2.5-5 Lbs at least once a week.

We did these every week with several variations. Moving from dumbbells to a barbell once strength was regained and finally moving to a supinated grip (palms up) from pronation (palms down) as inflammation subsided. We performed these with a variety of rep ranges going from high rep ranges 12-15 to lower ranges 5-8 as we regained strength.

“The Final Result”

Ultimately the shoulder returned to having full range of motion with zero pain in only 8 Weeks! This allowed a return to the gym with no limitations where the client was then able to get back to their fitness routine and crushing workouts. Most importantly he was then also able to get back to being able to be fully involved in his kids activities and play!
